Sauna Guide
What are the Different Types of Sauna?
Traditional Sauna
Finnish saunas or wood-burning saunas use hot rocks and high temperatures to create a dry heat experience. With low humidity, these saunas allow for deep sweating and ultimate relaxation, where hot stones allow essential oils mixed with water to be poured over creating waves of scented steam. You can find a variety of traditional saunas in our sauna shop.
Infrared Saunas
Infrared saunas use infrared light to heat the body directly, while traditional saunas heat the air. Along with far-infrared saunas, these offer a milder experience with lower temperatures, which some find more comfortable. If you are interested in infrared therapy please get in touch with us directly.
Steam Rooms
Steam rooms differ from saunas by utilising steam instead of dry heat. The high humidity can benefit respiratory health, skin hydration, and overall relaxation. While they provide similar detoxification benefits, steam rooms offer a distinct experience tailored to those who prefer moisture-rich environments.
What Are the Benefits and Risks of a Sauna?
-
Easing pain and muscle tension relief
-
Stress relief, promoting relaxation and weight loss
-
Improving cardiovascular health and improved circulation
-
Skin benefits, including hydration and cleansing
-
Potential benefits for asthma and breathing issues
-
Lower risk of Alzheimer's. Some studies suggest a connection between regular sauna use and brain health.
Health Risks and Precautions
Blood Pressure Risks
Sauna bathing dilates your blood vessels which can temporarily affect blood pressure, so people with cardiovascular disease should consult a doctor before using a sauna.
Dehydration Risk
Saunas promote sweating, which can lead to dehydration. Drink plenty of water before and after a sauna session.
Precautions
Limit your time in the sauna room, especially if you're new to sauna use. Start with short sauna sessions and gradually increase your time during regular sauna sessions.
What Is the Right Sauna for You?
Choosing between a Finnish sauna, an infrared sauna, or a steam room depends on your personal preference, as the health benefits are very similar. Many prefer the heat and ability to pour water and essential oils on the hot stones of a Finnish sauna, giving the best sauna experience. Our sauna shop is a great place to view various models.
How Long Should I Sit in a Sauna?
For most people, 10-20 minutes is an optimal session length. Beginners should start with shorter durations and adjust based on comfort. Your heart rate will rise during the sauna session, this is where the health benefits for your cardiovascular health come from. Take a 5-10 minute break with a shower and a cold plunge, before returning to the sauna room. Repeat 2-3 times.
How long should you ice bath?
It depends how cold the ice bath is. It is best to listen to your body and build up gradually. Just enough to cool off before the next round. Anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes is common.
How cold should an ice bath be?
This depends on your cold tolerance. Ice baths range from below 1 degree celcius up to 10 degrees. The most important thing is to be gentle with yourself and build up slowly.
Is It Okay to Use a Sauna Every Day?
Many sauna enthusiasts enjoy regular use for the therapeutic benefits for body and mind. However, listen to your body and stay hydrated.

Understanding sauna etiquette helps create a relaxing experience for everyone. Here are some key tips:
-
Always shower before entering.
-
Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.
-
Use a towel to sit on for hygiene.
-
Respect others' space, especially in private sauna sessions.
What sauna accessories to buy?
When buying a sauna, you will need the following:
-
Thermometer
-
Sand timer
-
Bucket and ladle
-
Essential oils (optional)

What is the purpose of a sauna hat?
A sauna hat helps protect your head from extreme heat, preventing overheating and keeping you comfortable during your session. It also helps retain moisture in your hair and enhances the overall sauna experience.
Important things to consider if you open a sauna business
Guided, Open and Private Sessions
Guided sessions are inspired by the European Aufguss. A facilitator is present and pours water mixed with essential oils on the hot stones creating steam. Often, the group goes in to the sauna together for 12-15 minutes before having a 5-10 minutes break with a shower and a cold plunge before repeating 2-3 times.
Open Sessions
In these sessions, people can freely use the sauna in their own timing.
Private Sauna Booking
Private sauna sessions are a great way to generate income. They are easy to manage and most people love a private session experience.
Location
While having a mobile sauna enables you to come and go from your favourite beach spot, the best way to build up regular customer is to find a semi-permanent location where you can run consistent sessions. A good location should include:
-
10-15 car parks
-
Changing rooms and toilets
-
Access to water for drinking and showers
-
Electricity (optional for lighting and cold plunge)
